Unrelated links: These links have nothing in common

(Note: The Internet is a dynamic place and web sites can come and go quite quickly. This is one of my older and some of the links may not work anymore. If you find that this is the case I invite you to look at some of my more recent articles. My links section has my favorite links from past articles and is checked regularly for non working links. Wayne)

In the course of researching articles I occasionally run across links that pique my curiosity and get bookmarked for a later day. Another source I use for sites is the usenet newsgroup misc.kids.computer. This group is a great place to find sites created by everyday people and is looking for visitors. Sometimes sites I run across in my travels become the idea for a later article but sometimes they just languish waiting to see the light of day. This week they finally get an airing as I clean out the bookmark file and these sites get their fleeting moments of fame.

The first is Bonus.com. This site has over 500 (or so they claim, I didn't count them all) fun activities for kids. Bonus.com is a closed site so kids can't just wander off into the great unknown. In my browser it started up in a separate window with no toolbar or area for entering a new URL. Though it's a nice touch I wouldn't rely on these measures to protect your kids from less savory areas of the web. It's a parent's responsibility to watch their kids' browsing just as much as it's a parent's responsibility to monitor their children's TV usage. A Java capable browser is a must for this site.

Two original point and click children's books are available at http://www.gate.net/~ar ooney/books.html. A frames capable browser is required, I liked the goose story best.

When I was writing my article about insects I came across the Froggy Page. This page has pictures of frogs, frog sounds and just about anything you want to know about frogs but might have been afraid to ask.

Knowledge Adventure is a software publisher but what really caught my attention at their site was the on-line encyclopedia. Why not give it a look?

ToonaCat's Kids Club is a site designed by a former 4th grade teacher and to quote from her description. "ToonaCat is geared towards promoting creativity in kids of around elementary age. They can display art, write stories and poems with on-line story maps and templates, read and send book reviews, print out designs to color, visit ToonaCat's favorite kid- made homepages and more!"
