What do you think of, kids, when you think of United States government?

Boring, right?

Well, it doesn't have to be. There are lots of educational and fun government links for you to visit. Let's go to some of them.

For starters, try the games at "Hip Pocket Change" government site, http://www.usmint.gov/kids/flashIndex.cfm . If you have a pop-up blocker on, you may not be able to play them. Ask your folks to help on this site if you can't access them.

How about some fun census facts for kids: http://factfinder.census.gov/home/en/kid... - you may even take a quiz. This is the site to go to when you have a report to do on a state.

Freddie the Fish is the Pittsburgh District Corps of Engineers water safety mascot. Go there to print out a coloring book: http://www.lrp.usace.army.mil/kids/kids.... . How fun!

Do you have savings bonds?

Perhaps your parents have invested in them for your college education. Go to this site to learn about them: http://www.publicdebt.treas.gov/sav/savk... .

Do you want to be a good citizen? This site is fun and for you: http://www.hud.gov/kids/index.html . There's a great scavenger hunt there to play. Why not use it for a birthday party?

Take a field trip here: http://www.hud.gov/kids/field1.html - it's fun!

Did you know 550 million acres of public lands belong to you?

That's right.

Go to this site to learn more: http://www.blm.gov/education/00_kids/con... . You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to participate in the site. One of the links is to a dinosaur bone yard mystery: http://www.blm.gov/education/00_kids/wil... .

Are you concerned about our environment?

Go to Tox Town to learn about the health and environmental issues in our communities: http://toxtown.nlm.nih.gov/index_content... . There are pictures that help you learn where there might be problems.

Have you ever been to the Smithsonian in Washington, DC?

If you have or if you haven't, here's a link to their kids' encyclopedia, http://www.si.edu/resource/faq/start.htm . You could spend hours here learning about everything from Amphibians to Jewels to Vikings! That's only a taste of all the great things you'll find. I'm on my way there now to read about the Hope Diamond. Clue: click on "Jewels".

I'm ready to play some more games. Are you?

Go to this Veteran's Affairs site to play: http://www.va.gov/kids/k-5/games_activit... . I had fun making a medal. Why don't you make one and print it out? You can color the capital - that's sure fun.

Have you ever heard of the Peace Corps?

Learn about it at http://www.peacecorps.gov/kids/ - you may want to help the volunteer pack their bags for a trip. You can do that here.
