Supportive StepsWe appreciate all your time and kindness. For the patients: Don't let the need for dialysis cripple you, either physically or emotionally. You can still lead a great life and do all you once enjoyed. You can still be a wonderful part of your community. You can still work, enjoy life, and be the same great, mother, father, aunt, uncle friend, sibling, etc., you always were before. Learn all you can about your kidney condition, and about your treatment choices. It helps a lot to be able to express your feelings down in a journal, this is especially true if you do not have anyone to talk with, or you don't want to always complain to those closest to you. Exercise if you are up to the challenge. It can give you loads more energy and can help you lose fluid weight through perspiration. Follow your diet as best you can. It's okay to cheat on your diet once in a while, but try to stick to your fluid allowance as this will make your dialysis treatments that much easier with less side affects. Take charge of your care, you can have a say in things, it is your body. If you are alone, or just feel lonely often, a small pet might prove beneficial. I was terribly sad and lonely during my diagnoses and hearing that I would soon need dialysis. Four months before I had to start dialysis, my husband brought me home a black and white kitten. He became a best friend during these terrible times, and more than once he gave me the will to keep on living. Don't be afraid to ask for help from your friends, family, doctors, and other staff. The months just prior to the need for dialysis are the worst. You are feeling increasingly sick, tired, helpless and hopeless, but hang in there. It does get better. Dialysis or a transplant can bring you back to feeling pretty good. There will always be days here and there that just stink, but a good day is just ahead!
