The question
Why me, am I a horrible person,
Did I do something wrong?
Did you have to bring suffering upon me,
To prove that I am strong
Will it make me a kinder person
If my kidneys do not work
Will it make me less uptight
If I 'm so tired, my duties I shirk?
Taking in small amounts of fluid,
Will I empathize and think,
About those in third world countries,
Who have little dirty water to drink?
Because I am so itchy,
Should I be thankful I have a brain,
To tell my fingers where to scratch,
So I don't go insane?
To face the fear of dialysis
And feel the needles puncture my skin,
Will I be grateful to this science
That allows my blood to flow out and back in.
If only we knew what you are thinking,
Of your bigger plans for us,
Maybe then we'd stop complaining,
And making all this fuss.
But until then we look up to heaven,
And exasperated we sigh,
"I love you and I know you love me,
So why God, why?"
A reply
My children to see you suffer,
Is not my doing or my style.
Believe me when I say,
I'd rather see you smile.
I am truly not the cause of
Misery you suffer through.
But know during these times,
I'm always here to share the pain with you.
I will use your harsh circumstances,
To bring about some good
Maybe you will gain a life lesson or find the courage,
To do something, you never thought you could.
Perhaps your experiences,
Will gain you a new friend,
One who is caring,
Who'll be there till the end.
You might gain new traits,
Like patience or sympathy.
You may get around to bringing about
A closer friendship with me.
Whatever happens to you,
It's not a punishment from me.
Would you wish upon your children
That they would be unhealthy?
Please take heart in knowing
I am always on your side.
My only job's to love you,
To care and be your guide.
I cannot explain why everything happens,
It's too vast to understand,
I will let you in on some secrets.
When you rise and take my hand.
We'll see everything together,
From heavens point of view,
You'll see how this and that makes sense,
And say "Wow I never knew!"
Until that time when you are called,
When you've reached the end of your lease,
I leave these gifts you can find in your soul;
Hope, joy and peace.
