There's another issue to tackle with all this gender-bending business. When singing a song normally sung by the opposite gender, should a singer change the lyrics to fit?
There seems to be some disagreement on this. Some think changing the lyrics is unnecessary, and even messes with the "purity" of the song. Sometimes, changing the words screws up the whole essence of the song--just try to imagine Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back" as sung to a man. Go on, I dare you. You can't, can you? Wait ... you can? Oh ... I guess you're more imaginative than I. Never mind. I usually change the lyrics to suit my gender, whenever possible. I just can't bring myself to pour my heart out in a love ballad to a woman. Not that there would be anything wrong with that. It might confuse my husband, though. Either that, or get his hopes up--I'm not sure which. What do you think about gender-bending karaoke? Should we change the lyrics to fit? Tell us what you think here. Go To Page: 1 2 |
