Bonus Article--Why Hil Decided to Become a Professional Writer

When I was in elementary school, I was a straight-A student. Okay, there was the occasional B, but they were mostly As. As a reward, I was allowed to spend my free-time in lower-grade classrooms, doing little tasks like grading papers, giving spelling tests, etc. At this early and impressionable age, my future goals became clear:
I was going to be a teacher.
There was never a doubt in my mind that teaching was my destiny, my true calling. I was the first of my friends to know exactly what my college major would be. Many people, including my close friends, family, and even my guidance counselor, tried to change my mind. I am very small and use a wheelchair, so some people thought the physical aspects of the job would be too much for me to handle. "I'll show you!" was my response. No one was going to tell me I couldn't handle something! I taught for three years. Guess what? It was a colossal mistake. The physical aspects weren't the only problem, though they certainly contributed. I just really, really wasn't cut out for teaching. So, now what? I'd spent my whole life convinced I was meant to be a teacher ... I didn't know how to do anything else! I searched for some sort of hidden talent or skill I could use to my advantage. I remembered that while in college, and for a year or two after while looking for a full-time teaching position, I wrote columns for two college newspapers and did reviews for an arts magazine. It was all for fun, but I thought,
Could I actually make a career out of this? Could I be a writer?
I decided freelance writing might be just up my alley. I could work barefoot in my nightshirt, night or day. It sounded perfect to me. I got a few small assignments for websites like AllGameGuide. I also started writing this column for Suite101. The problem was, most of the jobs I have found are low-paying, or don't pay at all. That's no way to put food on the table. This is why I was excited when I saw the course, Becoming a Professional Writer, being offered by Suite University. Maybe this course could help me find out what I could do to make my hobby a career. The course provided me with many valuable tips. The first thing I did was design my own writer's website, where I could showcase my clips and advertise my services. The course instructor, Sara Webb Quest, provides links to a few places where writers can create their own online portfolios free of charge (although one does not appear to offer this service anymore).
