Back in the Saddle Again, Pt. II

Last month, I began the story of my return to the karaoke world. After two years in a karaoke-free zone, I finally found a new venue to try out.

As my husband and I entered the bar, I noticed it was pleasantly roomy. Many bars that feature karaoke are small, hole-in-the-wall type places-but not this one. It was pretty empty, since it was still early. A low turnout is obviously a curse and a blessing for a singer. If there is a huge crowd of singers, you may be lucky to get one shot at the mic. If, however, there are too few, there is no one to hear you, and no crowd to get pumped up and into your music. Plus, if the turnout is low for too long, a bar may cancel a show altogether, which is obviously a very bad thing. I hoped the crowd would pick up a bit as the night progressed, and luckily, I wasn't disappointed.

Not wanting to be the first up, I took my time skimming the book for my first choice, as I sipped my Pepsi. I was pleased to see the books were pretty hefty. I've been to a few shows where the menus were six pages long-or, even worse, there were no menus at all. These books were at least two inches thick. They consisted of three sections: songs by title, songs by artist, and new entries. The kjs, Nunzio Entertainment, boast "one of the largest selections of music in the country" on their website. I'm not sure how true this claim is, as I have seen much larger, but it was definitely sizable.

I decided my best bet was to pick a song with which I knew I was comfortable: Extreme's "More Than Words."

Wow, what a rush! Every note of one of my all-time favorite songs felt just as I remembered. I haven't been to karaoke very many times since I got married, so having my husband beside me, and seeing the look in his eyes as I sang, was extra special. Filled with renewed confidence, I sang two more songs fairly quickly: Journey's "Lights," and Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life." I'd never done the Evanescence tune before, and was pleasantly surprised with the results. I'd been afraid I might shoot my esophagus out through my nostrils on a few of the high notes, but thankfully, all my organs remained in place. My husband tried to jump in on the male part, but it went by a bit quickly; we'll be sure to practice that for next time.
