Surreal Karaoke Moments

Like it or not, the most popular place to find karaoke is at a bar or pub. What else do we generally find in these venues? Say it with me now-A-L-C-H-O-H-O-L. Consequently, some pretty weird stuff can happen. It takes a lot to startle me, but these events even made little old jaded moi say, "What the ...?"

Hot Shots
As is often the case when alcohol is available, sometimes fights break out. Once, I was onstage singing one of my signature songs, Sarah McLachlan's "Adia." Unbeknownst to me, two men began an argument behind me. As I continued to sing my sweet ballad, the argument escalated. By now, I knew something was going on, but I didn't know what to do. So, I just kept singing. Fists flew behind me to the strains of my voice.... "We are born, innocent...."

The Crying Game
One Halloween, my favorite spot held a costume contest. I saw many interesting costumes, but the best, by far, was an over six-foot-tall man in full-on drag. The guy's outfit was brilliant: long, flowing mane, fishnet stockings, lingerie, and even prosthetic "womanly curves." The best part was witnessing several men attempt to pick "her" up after just seeing "her" from behind, only to shrink away in horror when "she" turned around.

Dirty Dancing
My old favorite karaoke joint didn't have much of a dance floor, but we always made use of what little space we had. Push a few tables and chairs out of the way-you've got yourself a dance floor. One night, this guy came in with his girlfriend. The guy was your typical hard rocker type: long hair, pierced eyebrow, plenty of chains, etc. His girlfriend was this little cute blond, wearing a black dress that would have fit better on a Barbie, but perhaps a bit snugly. They started to dance, and, as the crowd looked on, the guy pulled up his girlfriend's dress, and showed us way more than we wanted to see. Ok, I'm sure there were quite a few people that wanted to see more, but not me.

Dirty Dancing, Pt. 2
Picture this: Onstage was a tiny, tiny redhead, no taller than two and a half feet. She used a wheelchair. Shocking enough, no? She started to sing some dance number, when suddenly a man jumped in front of her, gyrating wildly between her and the monitor. She appeared to be a bit flummoxed, but somehow managed to continue. Then, the mysterious dancing man proceeded to give her a personal lap dance. The bar erupted in hysterics, and the tiny woman turned 50 shades of red, many of which have never been seen by man. Yet, she persevered, and managed to finish the song, to wild applause, both for her and her dancer.
