The following is a list of resolutions that KJs and karaoke singers should be making this year:
As a KJ, I will not hog the mic, nor give my buddies preferential treatment.
Nothing is more annoying to a singer than a KJ who sings 3 songs to every one by the audience, or who lets his pals butt into the rotation. As a singer, I will not attempt to sing an eight-minute-plus song if I have had more than one drink.
Trust me, if you are on your fifth tequila shot, attempting the 18-minute version of Iron Butterfly's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" is not a good idea. In fact, come to think of it, that's never a good idea, tequila or no. As a KJ, I will try to keep my music and my songbooks current.
KJs, if you want my friends' or my business, you need to have music that is more up-to-date than circa 1967. Also, your songbooks should contain your newest material, even if it's just on an insert. Don't make me come ask about each song. Finally, please don't hand me sticky, grungy books with ripped pages. Gross. As a singer, I will, under no circumstances, attempt Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On."
I don't think this one requires explanation. As a KJ, I will not go around town inquiring about rates, for the sole purpose of undercutting my fellow KJs and snaking their business.
Bad KJ. Very bad KJ. As a singer, I will never grab a mic unsolicited and sing with others, no matter how good I think I am, or how much help I think the singer needs.
First, you are probably only half as good as you think you are (especially if you're on that fifth shot I mentioned earlier). Second, it takes a lot of guts to get up on that stage. It sucks to work up the courage, only to have someone snatch the spotlight three bars into the song. Very tacky. As a KJ, I will not take tips just to boost a singer's place in the rotation.
Again, very tacky. Having an unfair rotation is a sure-fire way to lose business. As a singer, I will be sure to clap and cheer for everyone, no matter how tone-deaf they may be.
This ain't American Idol, folks. The point is F-U-N. Everyone deserves their moment in the sun. As a KJ, I will make sure I never leave dead air. I will chat with the audience, tell jokes-whatever I have to do. Go To Page: 1 2
