Karaoke Halloween

Adult Catwoman Costume
It's Halloween. The kids are spending the night at a friend's house. It's after nine o'clock, and the neighborhood kids have stopped knocking at the door. It's still early. What should you do? Why, sing karaoke, of course! (Did you really expect to see any other answer in this column?)

Many clubs and other venues have special events for Halloween. Some hold their events on Halloween night, while others are held the weekend before. This year, Halloween falls on a Friday, so it is likely that many places will hold their celebrations that night.

Since some KJs will hold costume contests, the first thing you need is a great costume. You can go as fancy or as casual, as expensive or cheap as you want. Some people rent or buy costumes, such as these Catwoman and Malificent outfits. Sometimes, simply a mask will do, like this Bart Simpson . For an even less expensive alternative, you can use your own clothes and a little imagination. A few years ago, I combined a plaid skirt and white, button-down shirt that I had in my closet, put my hair in pigtails-and, for one night, I was Britney Spears! I won the second-place prize that night, which was a $50 bar tab.

Some KJs try to stick to the theme of the night, and require that all songs be Halloween-oriented. There are several CDG packs that feature all Halloween music. One is Top Tunes Karaoke CDG Halloween Vol. 1 TT-069. It features the backing tracks and lyrics for such tunes as "Thriller" by Michael Jackson, "Ghostbusters" by Ray Parker, Jr., "Monster Mash" by Bobby Boris Pickett, and "Werewolves of London" by Warren Zevon, plus many others. It also includes a few tracks with vocals included, as well as some sound effects, like clanging chains and evil laughter.

If you are a KJ running your own Halloween show, you may want to play some different games that night, or do different activities to go with the theme. Hold a costume contest, or even request that attendees dress as their favorite recording artist. Then, require that they sing songs only by that artist. There are so many possibilities. Be creative!

Have a safe and fun Halloween, everyone. Save some peanut butter cups for me!
