Also, fairness to your singers is very, very important. Some KJs have been known to play favorites to their friends, or even hog the mic themselves. The best plan is to keep a rotation list, and add in new singers as necessary. That way, no one feels cheated. Some singers will try to buy their way up the rotation with a "tip," but if you want to keep your core followers, it is best not to accept these bribes. It only angers legitimate singers who may feel they are already paying enough by buying drinks. There is some debate whether tips should ever be taken, but the general rule of thumb is that they are alright, as long as they are not used as bribes.
Having a good rapport with your audience can also help in sticky situations. Since most karaoke venues tend to be bars, there is often copious amounts of alcohol being consumed. Thus, tempers will sometimes flare. Sometimes, unfortunately, they direct their anger toward you; they want to sing right now, they don't like the way the music sounds, etc. If you allow your temper to get the best of you, and react in a like manner, you will develop a reputation for this behavior, and soon singers and spectators alike will begin to avoid your shows. Think before you react, and calmly try to diffuse these situations as well and as quickly as you can. If you have read all four parts of this series, you are well on your way to a successful KJ career.
