Let's start the new year out right -- getting organized. Rather, than jumping around the educational spectrum, this year's articles will focus on one subject each month and be as user friendly as possible for students, parents and teachers. If you have suggestions for fun, interesting, free educational programs to use online, please e-mail me with suggestions. February's topic will be science.
I dedicate this first article of 1999 to math lovers everywhere. FYI, Jared is my 11-year-old soccer-playing mathematician who reads books like "Cool Math Facts" to lull himself to sleep. First, I want to share my favorite search engine. It's called Dogpile. No, I don't just like it because I'm a dog lover. It's a great vehicle for researching any subject. Put phrases in quotes to limit your search. When you're ready to search, click "fetch." Woof. Woof. The next stop is The Mining Company home page. It's got links to every subject imaginable. Click to math for links to several programs with: addition, subtraction, fractals, geometry, multiplication, division, numbers, percents and pre-algebra. There also are links to online lesson plans. Education 4 Kids is a fun place for kids to play drill games and better their skills. The math features include: Math Flashcards for Kids (K-8), Math Square Math Game (4-12), Math Tables Drill (4-12), Time Experience Drill (2-6) and Money Experience Drill (2-6). Mathematics Hotlist has amazing links to over 80 math sites including: Weekly Math Contests, Math Puzzles, Biographies of Women Mathematicians, The History of Math, Olympiad Math Madness, Mathland, Circles of Light: The Mathematics of Rainbows, Mathmania, Magic Cubes and Magic Squares, Symmetry and The Shape of Space, Clever Games for Clever People, HTML Mazes, The Pi Page and The Great Penny Toss. What does that mean? Good question. Find the answer at: The Harcourt Brace Animated Math Glossary. The glossary defines math terms and concepts by grade level ( 1-8). Each definition is followed by an example. Quick and easy to use. MegaMath is another glossary that defines math terms and concepts using examples. The Math Page is a hot list with K-12 links to several sites by category: basics, general, algebra, geometry, calculus, games & puzzles, professional development for teachers and probability and statistics. My Virtual Reference Desk has links to math sites by elementary, junior high and high school groupings. The reference tools and general reference groups provide a wealth of information on all subjects. Go To Page: 1 2
