Why didn't I see it? He had the classic symptoms but not knowing what I was actually seeing, I attributed it all to warmer weather. Here's the list of 'classic' symptoms but each symptom can by itself, be easily be confused with something else. These symptoms, even if only one, are ones that I will never overlook again and hope that no one else will either.
WARNING SIGNS OF DIABETES: Frequent urination Excessive thirst Extreme hunger Sudden weigh loss Weakness, drowsiness, or exhaustion Sudden vision changes or blurred vision Nausea and vomiting Fruity odor to the breath (or even a smell that reminds you of fingernail polish remover) Rapid, hard breathing (and while not listed as a 'classic symptom' there can often be sudden personality changes or mood swings) During these past two years I have educated myself as much as possible about type I diabetes. Early on, I decided that in order for my son to survive this disease, I needed to be on an intimate level with it, knowing and understanding each and every face that it might display in my son's life. Juvenile diabetes is a complex disease and just when you think you know all the answers, it throws another question your way. The good days leave you having learned something new about the disease, while the bad days can leave you ready to bang your head up against the wall in utter frustration as you seek to make sense of a disease that sometimes has no rhyme or reason. While I don't claim to have all the answers, I invite all of those that are interested to join me in this journey of learning to live with juvenile diabetes...at least until a cure is found!!!
