A stranger's influence

My first question was; why didn't she test her blood sugar? The second question came quickly, why didn't one of her parents test it before she slept too long? The answer was simple as I read on. Blood testing kits weren't available to her at the time. Edwarda's birthday is today, she is 52. Her mother, age 77, still cares for her at their home.

The saga of Terri Schiavo has affected my life to some degree. It brings to the forefront the need to have a living will and clearly state my wishes to those close to me. Edwarda has changed much more for me. The next time I 'feel' a low coming on and think I can squeeze one more minute before I eat something or I think I can eat and take my insulin in 'a little while', Edwarda will be there.

A message, thirty-six years in the making, will remind me of the opportunities that I have. Blood tests in five seconds, a spouse that knows the dangers of having diabetes and being ill, and the technology that could bring me enough years to see my grandchildren.
