News and Newspapers Online

The Web boast numerous sites that offer lists of URLs for online newspapers. Some, I've discovered, are more navigable than others. The worst of the lot are now lost amid my bookmarks, visited by me a few times and unlikely to cross my screen again.

Justin Ervin, a computing consultant at the Jackson Library at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, recently sent me an e-mail tipping me off to a site he maintains, "News and Newspapers Online." It's among the best of its type on the Web, and I'd recommend it for a visit and a bookmark. It's at http://library.uncg.edu/news/

You'll find lengthy lists of URLs for papers in the U.S. and Canada; Latin America and the Caribbean; Europe; Asia, Oceania and Antarctica (I think I'm about to become a regular reader of the Antarctica Sun); and Africa.

The site is distinctive because it's easily navigated and because of several features you won't find elsewhere. You can, for instance, search by language--a handy tool for, among others, students learning a new language. Other advanced search options are also available. (I amused myself for several minutes pulling up all of the papers with the words "Times," "Herald" or "Tribune" in the name. Not much brand-name originality in this business, is there?)

Another nifty feature is the option of creating a personalized list of papers. It's a useful way to call up your most-visited newspaper sites. Bookmark folders can perform the same function, but this feature makes adding and deleting quick and simple.

"News and Newspapers Online" also offers links to general news sites, including wire services, from around the world. There are many listed here that are new to me. Last but not least, you'll find links to other news reference sites, including news search engines.
