Liberal opinion on the Web© Daryl Lease
May 25, 1999
I don't know if anyone's done a study on whether one side of the political spectrum has made greater use of the Web than another, but I've been under the impression that folks on the right have been slightly more active in setting up e-zines and political-issue sites than others. I'm not so sure of that, though, after sifting through a list of leftie sites I've bookmarked in recent years. Liberals don't seem to be outnumbered in cyberspace, after all. There appears to be a healthy mix of sites devoted to all sides of the political debate. Below are a few of my favorite gathering places for liberal opinion. You'll find a list of conservative sites in an archive of previous articles located on the "welcome" page. As always, feel free to enter the "discussion" area (also on the welcome page) and add some of your favorite sites on the left, right and points between. I plan to revisit this topic from time to time, and I'd appreciate any suggestions about sites I should mention in future articles or provide links for. I'm especially interested learning more about international sites.
http://www.turnleft.com/
Here you'll find Turn Left, which bills itself as "the home of liberalism on the web." It is a rather big house, with links to issue-oriented sites, news updates, a chat room, a mailing list, and more.
http://epn.org/prospect.html
You'll find some of the best liberal writing on the Web here at the online version of The American Prospect. Its founders include former Labor Secretary Robert Reich. Articles are archived by category on the left side of the screen. http://tap.epn.org/idea/
This is Idea Central, a site affiliated with The American Prospect and the Electronic Policy Network. At this site and at http://epn.org/ you'll find an extensive archive of liberal takes on current issues, plus links to other liberal Web sites. Columnists include Robert Reich and Marian Wright Edelman, among others. http://www.mdle.com/WrittenWord/wwtoc.htm
The Written Word primarily features columnists and opinion pieces from the left of center but welcomes submissions from the full political spectrum. The site includes links to numerous resources on the left and right. http://www.populist.com
This site features samples from The Progressive Populist, a monthly print publication run by veteran newspapermen Jim and Art Cullen. In addition to links to liberal sites, you'll find columns by Molly Ivins, Jim Hightower, Ralph Nader and others.
http://www.mojones.com
This wired version of the venerable Mother Jones magazine is probably the best liberal site I've seen on the Web. In addition to articles from the magazine, you'll find daily updates, extensive links to news sites and liberal opinion, and archives of Mojo special reports.
