Conservative opinion on the Web

In a previous column, we took a brief look at how newspaper editorial pages are making the transition to the Web. But the old ink-and-newsprint variety certainly isn't the only source for good commentary online.

The Web is home to numerous e-zines and little-bit-of-everything sites that publish opinion pieces, on the left and the right, that you're not likely to read in local, regional or national newspapers.

Some are quite good, hosting writers who offer thoughtful takes on issues that get covered in the mainstream media and, more importantly, issues that don't.

Below I've highlighted a sampling of sites that are primarily devoted to conservative opinion. In an upcoming column, I'll focus on Web commentary from the left.

Enter Stage Right, A Journal of Modern Conservatism, is a nicely done site that offers work by P.J. O'Rourke, David Hackworth and other lesser-known contributors. The journal also highlights a conservative site every day: http://www.enterstageright.com/site/

Emmett Tyrell Jr.'s popular print publication offers excerpts online. In addition to Tyrell's pieces, you'll find Ben Stein, John Corry and others.

The Freeper says it now gets 50,000 to 100,000 hits a day. Among other things, it offers a multitude of links and a very active forum for readers to discuss the politics of the day.

This e-zine, run by Doug Thompson and staff, has proven to be one of the most popular and often most provocative sites on the Web. The site is constantly evolving, with new features added often

Here's one doorway into the Ring of Conservative Sites, a consortium of Web opinion from the right. This link will take you to a page for registering conservative web sites. To visit sites already registered, simply scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on "next site" or "random" under the Ring of Conservative Sites banner.
