Join the ClubAre you new to jet skiing and feel a little apprehensive about taking your new PWC out by yourself? Do you wish you knew some new places to go riding on your PWC? Maybe you would like to meet people who share your long time passion for jet skiing? Whatever your situation, I think we would all agree that it is always fun to get together with people who share common interests. Why not join a PWC Club? PWC Clubs are springing up all over the world. PWC Clubs organize day rides, weekend tours and race related activities. Most PWC Clubs have at least one organized event a month. Some clubs, such as the Finger Lakes Region Personal Watercraft Club in Rochester, New York, get together for weekly rides. Finger Lakes Regional Personal Watercraft Club hosts the Over the Hump Ride every Wednesday night from the end of May through the end of August. Clubs also sponsor poker runs and closed course racing and some have regular meetings. In addition to organized rides, members are also encouraged to get together for spontaneous rides. Being a member of a PWC Club almost ensures that there will always be someone to go riding with. PWC Clubs are also active in community events, legislative activities and safety awareness. At a time when more and more waterways and state parks are banning PWCs, these clubs help to promote jet skiing in a positive light. Throughout the season, various PWC Clubs participate in beach clean ups and sponsor rides as fund raisers for various charities. In 1997, Coastal Carolina Jet Sports Club was awarded the prestigious Grassroots Grant by Boat/US Foundation for Boating Safety. Coastal Carolina Jet Sports Club has been successful, after wading through much government red-tape, in posting signs across the entire state of South Carolina advising PWC operators of the responsibilities associated with operating their craft.
Membership fees vary from club to club. Some of the clubs have sponsors which cover the membership fees while other clubs charge anywhere from $10 to $50 per year, depending on how many activities are planned for that year. Most clubs charge only an additional $5 to $20 for family memberships. Many times these dues will entitle the members to maintenance workshops, newsletters, and discounts on PWCs and PWC supplies.
Make sure to pick a club that is right for you. Some clubs are geared more for racing enthusiasts, while others are strictly for recreational pleasure riding. Many PWC Clubs have family-oriented events and most clubs offer activities for everyone from beginners to professional level racers. Read the description of the club and call the club directly for more information. A couple of good sites which will list the clubs in your area are PWC Club USA and IJSBA Charter PWC Clubs. ProJets Watercraft Club Luxembourg was formed in the Spring of 1996 in Luxembourg to ensure proper operation of PWCs on the river Mosel.
