A Do-It-Yourself Project: Winterizing Your PWC

© Karen K. Patton

November is here and depending on where you live, it may be time for you to winterize your PWC. When storing your PWC for prolonged periods of time, such as winter storage, you must do some basic preventive maintenance to ensure against deterioration. You can take your PWC to the dealer to have this done, or you can do it yourself.

Cooling System
Your engine pumps water through water cooled tunnels to carry the heat away. You've probably seen water spitting out a vent when you ride. The cooling system needs to be flushed to get rid of salt, sand, and dirt. Follow the instructions in your owner's manual.

Lubrication
Your PWC will probably need extra care to prevent rust and oxidation from occurring while it's resting for the winter. Most owner's manuals will instruct you on how to protect the carbs, pistons and cylinders with a coat of oil. The cabling needs attention too by using generous coats of oil, rust-inhibitor or grease. Coat the engine with a thin layer of silicone protectant and lubricant. Wipe down the seals with a vinyl protectant to keep them from drying out and cracking. Check out those grease and lube points specified in your owner's manual.

Fuel System
Top off your tank with fresh fuel and a can of fuel conditioner/stabilizer. A full tank prevents condensation from forming in a tank full of air.

Battery
First, remove that battery from the machine (handle it carefully). Clean the battery's casing and terminal with a mixture of baking soda and water. Keep the terminals in shape by protecting them with a coat of petroleum jelly. Keep the battery charged and check the fluid in the cells. I've been known to neglect the battery, so I budget to buy a new one every 48 months. I wouldn't want to get stuck out on the water!

Cleaning Wash, rinse, and dry your machine's exterior, engine, and bilge area with fresh water and wax the hull.

Storage
If you can't store your PWC in your living room, try the dining room (you don't use it much anyway). If you have to store your PWC outside, buy a cover that fits. Check out Jet Ski Watercraft Econo Covers and Deluxe Custom Covers.
