A View From Behind the PWC: Towables

You don't have to sit in the driver's seat to have fun on your PWC. More and more people are discovering the fun of throwing a towable behind their personal watercraft. Thanks to the increased power and versatility of today's PWCs, towing is quickly becoming a fun way to spend part of your time on your PWC. While tubes and water skis are still favorites, there are other towables you may not have considered for your PWC. Behind the Boat - the Magazine of Boat-Towed Sports is an informative source for learning about the various towables which will work well with your PWC.

Wakeboarding

Wakeboarding is one of the fastest-growing water sports in the country. The wakes may be a little small behind the PWC, but speed isn't a necessity for wakeboarding, and the pulling ability is there.

Launch Wakeboard Magazine in an on-line magazine which includes trick tips, shop profiles and interviews about wakeboarding. On Surfari to Stay is an excellent article by Jeff Hemmel of Watercraft World regarding the marriage of the wakeboard and the PWC.

Kneeboarding

The take-off speeds required for kneeboarding are very slow, and once the kneeboarder is up and surfing, the kneeboard's wide profile provides little resistance. The ease of riding a kneeboard has encouraged many people to try it. You can usually get up on your first or second attempt, and you can learn and master some simple tricks your first day. Depending on the kneeboard you want, you can purchase a kneeboard cheaper than you can a pair of skis, and you will probably have twice the amount of fun.

Robert Conard's Home Page is a valuable source for information on kneeboarding including information from the American Kneeboarding Association, tricks and links to other kneeboarding sites.

Air chair

The air chair is a perfect match for the PWC. It doesn't require a lot of wake for tricks, and it doesn't pull as hard as some of the other towables. To learn more about the air chair, check out Dare to Air by Tony Kalrich.

Where to Buy

So this sounds exciting and you are ready to run out and buy your new towable? Where to Buy Towables and Towable Buyer's Guide from PWC Magazine will assist you in finding the best deal on your new towable.

Safety First

Find out the local ordinances governing skiing in your area, including any restrictions on using a PWC as a tow vehicle. There may be special rules regarding spotters on-board or using a signal flag when towing a skier or boarder.
