Have PWC, Will Travel - The Brazos River

I have had a lot of fun hooking up the PWCs and traveling all over the United States checking out different waterways. From the e-mail I have received over the years, I know I am not the only one. In the next few months I will be featuring great places to go jet skiing. I would like to hear from you and find out where you like to shred the water in your PWC.

I live in Texas and have tried out a lot of the waterways in North and Central Texas. I have received a lot of e-mail from people asking me about jet skiing on the Brazos River. The Brazos River cuts through the heart of Texas winding 700 miles from northwest Texas to the Gulf of Mexico. When the water level is up you can travel for many miles through the narrow winding waterway with beautiful scenery on both sides. Long distance riding is one of my favorite things to do on my PWC and the Brazos is an excellent river for this. We usually put in at a secluded boat ramp and camping area south of Ham Creek Park near Lake Whitney. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has a great site on Lake Whitney, titled Texas Inland Lakes - Lake Whitney. The clickable map at this site will give you a better idea of the area. Ham Creek Park is listed as Point "A" on the clickable map.

There is a lot to see on this part of the Brazos River and the riding is incredible. The waterway is narrow and winding. There are some interesting beaches and you will also encounter some small rapids. Once you reach a certain point on the river, boats aren't able to maneuver upstream, so you will only see other jet skiers and people tubing or canoeing downstream. We have actually driven our PWCs upstream as far as we could go, cut the engines, and laid out on the PWCs floating back downstream along with the people who were tubing and canoeing. The Brazos River is considered one of the Top 40 Non-Whitewater River Destinations for canoeing and camping.

It is really only possible to go this far upstream with a PWC when the water level is up. You will have to watch the river bottom carefully to make sure that you can maneuver upstream. We have put more than one scratch in the fiberglass attempting to get upstream. Contact the Brazos River Authority for information on the river conditions.
