Origin of the word jazz

By the mid -'20s, the word jazz began to show up in diverse writings about the music and the times. Prior to that , some of the earliest jazz was know as Ragtime, due its ragged rhythms as will be explained later in the coming articles.

Yet, more than 100 years after the earliest jazz music was made, the word jazz is embedded in the national and international consciousness. For simplicity's sake, I assume that most everyone, whether they like it or not, uses the word jazz to describe the type of music I intend to cover through this site.
