Do be extremely careful on the roads of Japan. Any accident involving death or injury will bankrupt you; the laws are very different here, and you can't bank on not being held responsible no matter what the circumstances. If found responsible, you may have to pay lost wages for entire busloads of people, or the projected lifetime salary of some young student you killed.
Don't argue with police. There are no brutality laws here. If the cop wants to crack your head, he can do it with impunity.
Don't be careless with your valuables. Japan is one of the safest, most honest countries on earth. If you leave a wallet full of money on the bus, someone may go well out of their way to return it to you. But common sense dictates you should lock your doors, car doors, etc. and keep an eye on valuables. There's no sense tempting people, and besides, there are lots of us foreigners in Japan, too. ;-)
