The Wednesday before Thanksgiving during any calendar year is usually a festive event best served in a city bar. Yet, over the years, I had begun to appreciate the tranquil bliss of a mellow bar, as opposed to a thoroughly filled classy establishment. With this dilemma in mind, I plotted my course of actionas to what my brother and my plans would be for that Thanksgiving eve. I was sitting down for a sushi lunch at Osaka’s, when I picked up the local Alternative Press (ArtVoice), looking for an alternative to the magnet of people. Two options arose as I leafed through the pages.
Plan A was a trip to a downtown Jazz bar called the Calumet to see the local favorites “The Waz” set the funk at the classy bar. They had been described to me as a college version of Medeski, Martin, and Wood. However, the general expensiveness of the enue and it’s proximity to downtown began to cast doubt on it as a viable option.
Plan B was to experiment with a Grateful Dead cover band called “Sonic Garden.” They were playing at a bar that could be classified as a dive. However, the obscurity of the band and its location appealed to us and sealed the decision to fil our heads with a series of Dead covers.
