Suit Up Your Italian Greyhound for the Outdoors

Of all the IGs I've encountered, none enjoy the cold weather. In fact, these dogs often turn their noses up at the slightest drizzle or too cool a breeze; and with such little body fat, they are totally justified in doing so. It's no secret that IGs don't like to go potty in the pouring rain, nor do they appreciate taking a long walk on a snowy December morn. As an IG owner, it is crucial to have the appropriate gear to keep your little one warm. I figured why not have fun with suiting up your IG, seeing as they need to be wrapped up ... why not do it in style?

If any breed is well-suited for luxury wear, it's the IG. They look so elegant in pretty much everything, but anything a little extra-special makes for a real show-stopper. An IG needs a waterproof coat for rainy days; a warm snugly coat for cold days; a fuzzy jammy for around the house (that's if your IG isn't a nudist! I've met some IGs that refuse to be in a state of dress while inside); and, an all-season coat that you can use for days it is not too cool out, but not warm enough for your IG to be "exposed."

One rule that IG owners seem to abide by: nothing is ever to fancy or pretty for their IG. In fact, I know a seamstress who makes the most beautiful clothes. She made me a coat, and that got my wheels turning - why not a tailor-made fashion coat for my IG? So the next fashion statement she'll make is with a pale blue wool coat with a turtleneck. It might seem frivolous, but it isn't if you consider the prices of some of the junky coats you find in pet stores - this coat is going to be well-worth the expense.

I've never found clothing in a pet store that actually fits an IG. This is understandable considering how miniscule their waists are. The best place to find IG clothing is on the Internet. Judy Longhouse, whose fashions you can find through a link on the IGCA's website, makes some great stuff. In fact, lately, I've even spotted some faux fur IG muffs and other great items she's made. Her prices are fair, especially because the yarns, fabric, and sewing work are so fine. I have yet to hear anything but positive feedback from people who've bought from Judy Longhouse. Perhaps the best reason to support her IG wears is that your money goes to an IG rescue fund.
