Using Other Sources: Part I: Newspapers


Browsing through newspapers won't be all that productive, or easy, genealogy-wise, however. If you're working through inter-library loan, try looking for specific information, such as birth announcements, marriages, or obituaries. These are events of which you already know the date they took place, so you can be fairly certain your search will be fruitful. Also, if you are working through inter-library loan, you will only be permitted to request a few microfilms at a time.

This will also give you the chance to gauge the usefulness of the particular newspaper. Do they have many stories about relatively mundane events, such as traffic violations or the sale of a home? These are signals for you to start reading that newspaper from the first issue to the last!
