Since September 11, the Islamic faith has become a subject of intense debate and analysis. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, yet remains largely misunderstood by many Americans. The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) will air "Muslims," a two-hour documentary presented by FRONTLINE and the Independent Production Fund on May 9th at 9pm in an effort to shed some light on the Islamic faith.

The documentary will acquaint viewers with Muslims from Egypt, Iran, Malaysia, Turkey, Nigeria, and the United States, to provide a better understanding of the Islamic faith and those who practice the religion. According to the PBS press release, the broadcast seeks to answer: What does it mean to be a Muslim? How does their faith shape their lives, identities, and politics? Does Islam deserve its reputation as a patriarchal, authoritarian, and anti-Western religion? And what role does militancy play in the Muslim world? As "Muslims" travels from Egypt to the U.S. it will explore and answer these and many more questions.

"With tensions between Islam and the West at an all-time high, there is a need for a new perspective on Muslims and Islam," said Alvin H. Perlmutter in a statement, executive producer and director of the Independent Production Fund. "Through portraits of Muslims around the globe, we reveal the many diverse interpretations of Islam as well as the struggle to adapt to the modern world."

At the close of the film, the documentary will also examine what shape Islam may take in the future. Following the broadcast, viewers can visit FRONTLINE's Web site, at www.pbs.org/frontline for extended coverage and additional information on the story. This will include sections on: Profiles of Muslims featured in the film, "What do Muslims believe?" "Frequently Asked Questions," interviews with Muslim scholars, a historical chronology, maps, and much more.
