Celebration of Eid ul-Fitr

Mariam, 25, Pakistani, Richmond Hill, Canada:

"I spent this year's Eid with my whole family, after a long time. My parents were visiting from Jeddah and we got together with some old family friends. The night before Eid we had a party, known in Pakistan as 'Chand Raat', or 'Moon night'. The night of the moon sighting. We had a gathering for all the women who wanted to come, put on henna, showed off our new clothes, had sweets and exchanged a few words from the Qur'an. After a long time, it felt like Eid in Canada."

Khadija, 40, Irish-Italian American, Brooklyn, NY:

Day 1: "We prayed outside in a park in Brooklyn, which was covered by the local news. There were rides for the children across the street in another part of the park. My daughter had a great time on the rides, had cotton candy and other usually limited treats and when we went home my mother came over for a vist."

Day 2: "We went to other festivities at a convention center. There were more rides for the kids and other things, like food, toys and Islamic items. Once again, my daughter had a great time (ah, that cotton candy!). We saw lots of friends that we don't normally see all that regularly, because of the distance."

Issam, 27, Jordanian, Clifton, NJ:

Anyway, alhumdillah I got to the mosque. In the mosque we prayed al-fajr then we started the takbeer for al-Eid to 7:30. After a half hour it was time to give some donation for the mosque, and then we prayed salat al -Eid , and then listened to alkotbah, then we made dawat. My dawat was that God help me to find alzwajah alsaleha (good wife). Outside the mosque there were some tents for the men and the women and food and halaw (sweet things), and everybody was happy ,and they hugged each other and shook hands. It was a lot of fun there. After that I took some rest in the home, and called friends in the U.S.A. and all over."

Sulaiman, 23, Sierra Leone, Falls Church, VA:
