``Glory to (Allah) Who did take His servant for a journey by night from the sacred (Al-Haram) mosque to the farthest (Al-Aqsa) mosque whose precincts We did bless, in order that We might show him some of Our signs: for He is the One Who heareth and Seeth (all things).’’ (Qur’an 17:1)
The Al-Aqsa mosque was built forty years after the Al-Haram mosque in Mecca, making Al-Aqsa mosque the second mosque created on Earth. The Al-Aqsa mosque was also built by the Khalif Abdul-Malek Ibn Marwan in 691. In a Hadith (sayings of the Prophet) by Tabarani, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
``Prayers in al-Masjid (mosque) Al-Haram are equivalent to 100,000 prayers, and prayers in my Masjid (in Medina) are equivalent to 1,000 prayers, and prayers in Bait-ul-Maqudis are equivalent to 500 prayers.’’
Bait-al-Muqadis is the compound consisting of the Al-Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock. Prayers made in the mosques in Bait-al-Muqadis are equal to 500 prayers.
