Fernandez Doubles Up

The fact that the car went airborne and came right back down on the track was a plus for the IRL's new aerodynamic package. They instituted the new package earlier this season to keep the cars from going airborne for a great distance, following the terrible crash that Kenny Brack had in last season's finale at Texas. Of course, one has to consider that it has a lot to do with the way the car leaves the track, as to how it takes to the air. Brack's car went up over the wheel of another car and went into the air sideways, cart wheeling into the catch fence, disintegrating the car as it spun along the fence. Rice's car slid sideways in front of another car, causing it to simply flip over when the air got up underneath it. All crashes are different, and all crashes have different results when the air hits the front and back wings from different areas where it wasn't designed to.

There are only two events left in the season, with the next event coming up at California Speedway on Sunday, October third. Last season's winner at the California facility was Sam Hornish Jr. He was followed across the finish line by Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan, Dan Wheldon, Tomas Scheckter, Helio Castroneves, Roger Yasukawa, Scott Sharp, and Al Unser Jr. Castroneves led the field off, winning the pole position with a speed of 226.757 miles per hour.
