Hornish Wins With Photo FinishRed Bull Racing made a temporary driver switch prior to the Delphi Indy 300. Buddy Rice was replaced by Alex Barron for the event. Team owner Eddie Cheever Jr. stated that it wasn't a case of a driver being fired (Rice), but a case of a driver being hired (Barron). With the return of Felipe Giaffone, Barron was available to take over the ride. Okay, sure, we've all heard that one before. Cheever stated that he had a top notch crew, a new powerful engine, and that Barron was hired to get results. In other words, Rice couldn't be depended upon to get the results that Cheever wanted. Out of the 13 races Rice had run prior to Chicagoland, he only had four top tens, three ninth place and one tenth place finish. You can expect to see Rice either moving on or else getting very little seat time. Buddy Rice was in the No. 52 Red Bull pits as an observer during the Delphi 300 at Chicagoland. Barron finished a respectable seventh, bettering any of Rice's finishes for the current season. Sam Hornish Jr. won the Delphi 300 at Chicagoland Speedway in an exciting photo finish. It appeared to be one of the closest finishes in years as three of the Indy racers approached the line at once at speeds over 220 miles per hour. It's a good thing they had a camera to record the finish, as the IRL cars are practically quicker than the human eye can see when it comes down to detail! Hornish reached the line first on the outside next to the flagstand in the No. 1 Pennzoil/Panther Racing Chevy with Scott Dixon in the No. 9 Target/Ganassi Toyota on the inside finishing second, while Bryan Herta braved the middle in the No. 27 Archipeligo/Andretti Honda, finishing third. All three of the racers were just inches apart in all directions. It was the closest one two three finish in Indy racing history. The top ten starters and how they finished:
