My History Is America's Hirstory

© Leona MacDonald

Yesterday I went into Washington D.C. for a day of relaxation with my husband. We went to the Museum of Modern Art and saw a lovely display of Celtic furniture and artwork in one of the exhibits. We went to the Dubliner a famous Irish Pub for lunch. Afterward we went down the block to the United States Printing Office Bookstore. Big yawn right? WRONG!

Aside from all that really boring stuff, that you might expect, there were many books on population demographics, census information, and even more that you could order that weren't on the shelves. That got me interested. I was just about to leave when my eye spied an interesting book, My History Is America's History. I picked it up for a peek and then started drooling. Within it's beautiful pages an astounding amount of information on putting together a history for your family. I had to purchase it! The examples of creative stories were very well presented.

Okay so you are now sitting there thinking, "I'm not American." I hate to tell you this but it doesn't matter. If you've never done a history then this is your must buy book. It helps you begin. It gives you ideas on how to get going, how to preserve documents, how to preserve heirlooms, photographs, and stories. It tells you where to go on-line, how to put up a family tree. Golly it's just a great book and it doesn't get too complicated. It's simple and easy to understand.

That's not all either. There's a Website!!!! The Website and the book are funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and it's very well done. I'd like to encourage all of you Irish-American folk to put your family stories and genealogies up on this site and preserve your Irish history, our Irish history, for each of us to enjoy.

Check out the Website and see what is stories are up there now and get some ideas. Go to http://www.myhistory.com and do a search under the "Read America's Stories" section. You have to click on "search the entire history section" link. Then go to the ancestry tab and select Irish and you will be given, as of today, 20 matches. You will find more on this site of Irish interest if you look around and it's certain to grow as time goes on.

By the way you can purchase the book right on the site. You won't be sorry!

Hi Leona,

My History sounds like a good book. I will have to check out the site, too. Well, I just tried to but there is a "traffic jam on the information highway!" I will definitely try again.
