Longford County WWW Resources

© Leona MacDonald

Longford County is one of my family stomping grounds. I got a bit curious on how much information I could find. Unfortunately I didn't find a lot. That's how the "head hunting" business goes on the net sometimes.

I went to IrelandGenWeb project and looked up Longford and immediately was blessed with a listings of baronies and parishes. You can find it at this URL. http://www.rootsweb.com/~irllog/valuatio... The find made it quite easy to then go through the records on their site and other sites.

There is a mailing list that could be useful as well. The name of the list is IRL-LONGFORD. It is a mailing list for people that have genealogical interests in County Longford, Ireland. To subscribe send a mail : "subscribe" to irl-longford-l-request@rootsweb.com or irl-longford-d-request@rootsweb.com for the digest version. All you do is send them a quick e-mail and after you are confirmed to the list you may mail in questions to a global audience of researchers.

IrelandGenWeb Longford http://www.rootsweb.com/~irllog/ has a lot of information that's being updated constantly. Check the URL often.

County Longford, Ireland Query Forum http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.c... is part of the Longford IrelandGenWeb project. You can post questions here are well.

GenUki Longford http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/irl/LOG/ has many resources for you to check out and it's a well done site as well.

It was very difficult to find much on Longford. However if you go to http://www.google.com and type in "irish genealogy longford" and add the family you are looking for it will narrow things down for you.

If you have some good Longford links to share with us please add them in the discussion area. I'll add them to my links as soon as possible. Also attend out chat nights on Mondays and maybe Sean O'Sullavan and I can help you with finding data off-line.

Happy Hunting!

Hi Leona,
Great information, as always! I didn't know about that Google tip and I use Google a lot for other research. I imagine it would be useful for a different county. I'm going to give it a try. ...
