Fianna http://www.rootsweb.com/~fianna/
Fianna is jam packed with all sorts of information for any Irish Genealogy researcher. This is a site of the utmost importance. You will spend hours and hours going through this site. I can't express to you just how much information is packed on these pages. Who is Fianna? Apparently they are a group of Genealogy students that decided to take their name from a group of warriors that defended the High King of Ireland. They like each other and decided to develop some ways to remain together in a unit long after their classes were over. The group put together this Website to bring you everything you need to know in one place. Kind of like one stop shopping. They have, as with their name bearers, the highest codes and standards that they try to bring to life on their WebPages. I like that policy. I must say have lived up to their code, and brought it to life, on their pages. Excellent job folks! A Quick Tour of the SiteYour first stop should be the "GUIDE TO IRISH Genealogical RESEARCH" on their pages. This section is filled with the most useful information I've yet to see compiled on one site. The migration patterns, that are on these pages, to various countries are very useful. If you know where a family would up you can pretty much guess how they got there. If you know where that same family started out from in Ireland, these pages should give you a good idea of their exact route to where they decided to settle. Check your ancestors children. The locations of their births may correlate with the migration patterns listed here and you may just be able to ascertain more about them. Perhaps a port they left from or arrived at? These are the things that perplex us most. Alphabet soup has all sorts of great information. Everything from geographic abbreviations, to weights and measures. There's a timetable for Irish History that will give you a good idea of what was happening in Ireland at the time your ancestor left. These are normally pivotal matters that directly impacted why your ancestor emigrated. There are census explanations that are quite detailed. It will give you the whole story on what happened, why, and it gets into the nitty gritty of all the issues of each census. There are also tips in here that are useful. Such as the terms brother and brother-in-law not being reliable as well as "birth place" not being reliable. You must read this guide to census Go To Page: 1 2
