Irish Passenger Lists

Ship Passenger Lists

The good news is more and more Passenger Lists are showing up on the Internet each day. The bad news is they might not be of much help.

Passenger Lists were mostly just a list of names. Sometimes there is more data. I've seen them with notations on height, illnesses, deaths, family relationships, last address, age, and other data. I've also seen them with little more than first initial and last name. It's a roll of the dice.

You also have to remember that the name you are looking for may not be spelled the way you think. Whoever kept the list, wrote it down, may have spelled the names the way they sounded or the way it may have been spelled in the country they themselves were from. Most ship lists aren't always accurate or complete either.

For further reading on Ships Passenger Lists there's an interesting article titled "Locating Ship Passenger Lists" by Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG at the following URL: http://www.genealogy.com/genealogy/8_mgp... . It gives tips and advice on looking for records. Another good site to visit is Genealogy Resources on the Internet's page Info on Ship Passenger Lists http://www-personal.umich.edu/~cgaunt/pa... .

Irish Passenger Lists on the net.

Ship Search http://www.obitcentral.com/shipsearch/?c... I had to send you to this site first. It works quite well! It searches through all the names of passengers on many many sites in one fell swoop. As a matter of fact I may have found one of my husbands family arrivals on this site. It's really awesome! You'll like it a lot.

Andrew J. Morris Genealogy-Irish Emigrants http://www.genealogy.org/~ajmorris/irela... This has a lot of ships lists on it, however, some of the links are out of date.

Una's Genealogy Stuff http://idt.net/~unatg/index.html Contains a lot of information on Irish ships.

Sites with Genealogical Source Material http://freespace.virgin.net/alan.tupman/... A fairly extensive listing of Irish Ships.

The National Archives of Ireland Transportation Records Database http://www.nationalarchives.ie/search01.... This is an On-line database of all Irish citizens transported for crimes between certain dates. Actually it's fun to look through and see the crimes. Stealing neighbors sheep had me laughing pretty hard. Harold Ralston's Links to Ship Passenger Lists http://www.execpc.com/~haroldr/shiplist.... You'll love this listing too it's quite good.

Passenger Ships and Emigration Records http://www.ajourneypast.com/researchpass... This is an awesome site. Takes a while to load but I think you'll enjoy it. Make certain you check out her main page. What a lovely site and rich with information. I'm glad I stumbled upon it. If the music gets on your nerves just click the stop button.
