Shopping Online for Deals 2001

  • Free trades. Online brokerages often offer free trades or cash to open or transfer assets. I use Fidelity and they gave me $100 just to transfer some stock shares I had in my safe deposit box into their care. I had the choice of $100 or ten trades and I took the cash since I am not a trader. Often they don't advertise all these deals so ask before you transfer money or securities and you might get a deal like that!

    Keeping existing customers:

I read that much money is being spent keeping existing customers. Sites often spend a fortune to get you, so they are willing to spend to keep you and get you to expand your shopping within their site or with their partners.

    • Discounts to try other areas . I started off buying books at Amazon.com and then they sent me a coupon to try their drug store partner, DrugStore.com.
      • The prices were better than my discount drug store
      • I did not have to pay tax and
      • the $10 off coupon more than covered the $3.95 shipping charge.
I later got a 2nd coupon to try their drugstore partner again after I ordered a DVD!

    • Discounts for repeat business. I bought a DVD from Amazon.com and then after several months, they sent me another coupon giving me another $10 off another DVD. Shipping is only $2.95 for the DVD so I get to buy new releases cheaper than I can get the videos if I wait for these offers. I just got another $10 off a DVD coupon in the mail this week (11/27/00)!
It pays to read your email from the online stores you shop at as they often have special coupons. This gets you back to the store AND it gets you in the habit of reading email from them.

    Last Minute Gifts

Sometimes you need a gift quick. I find books, DVDs and CDs are great as they are easy to return, cost little to ship and you can have them shipped overnight if you are in a pinch. Here are a few of my favorite sites to get quick service at a reasonable price.

  • 100 Hot DVDs: DVD Shipping & Handling is $2.98 (Videos too)

  • Gift Ideas by Price: A good way to generate ideas.

Dell often has great deals on systems they want to move fast. Some times they build too many for a large order and then close them out. Click the link and then click "Hot Deals" at the top under the "Systems" tab.

    Hi Kirk,
I saw your link on Jerri's Shopping Thread. I'm glad I stopped by. This is a valuable resource! I also enjoyed the link to your favorite gift suggestions. I saw quite a few that I'm sure are ...
