St. Patrick's Day and Asset Allocation

St. Patrick is known for driving the snakes from Ireland. Rather than chase business away with high taxes, the Irish government is making it attractive for companies to do manufacturing in Ireland. For along time, Ireland was known as a country with beautiful scenery and little industry. Ireland is also known in the US for its beer, potatoes and the "Irish Spring" commercial. What many probably don't know is that Ireland has become very friendly to high technology manufacturing which is providing many jobs for its citizens. Hewlett-Packard, Intel and Apple computer, to name a few, now have a presence in Ireland.

For the common investor to invest in Ireland, I recommend buying a diversified mutual fund that invests in Europe. This allows the fund managers to select the best companies in all of Europe and doesn't require them to invest all their money into a single area. T. Rowe Price and Invesco have good managed European funds and Vanguard has a good European index fund. I would be quite comfortable having five to ten percent of my portfolio in these funds - just one is fine.
