Who Do We Listen To Next Year?

Who do we listen to next year?

I have much respect for Steve Harmon, Mary Meeker, Henry Blodget and the Motley Fools as they were early supporters of the internet. I just wonder how much of what the "Internet Experts" say is due to being bullish on the hot part of the market and then getting instant fame for being right?

Should we be making investment decisions on their advice for an overall portfolio or should we just listen to their opinions on the internet? Do their opinions even matter these days? Have they picked recent winners or are they riding a few good picks made several years ago with no real barn burners since?

Did any of these guru's invest in the semiconductor capital equipment stocks in the fall of 1998 where some were ten times lower then their present values? Some like myself might have missed the internet stocks in 1997 and 1998 but were buying the right semiconductor capital equipment stocks over that time period and so have a partial redemption as our public portfolios are showing huge gains from these stocks.

Brinker Lambastes, Followers Follow

Clearly, those that were saying the internet was a hot place for future growth and were advising investing in B2B and B2C internet companies 2 years ago or longer are truly visionary. I sure wish I could have added my name to that list as I am sure many market pundits would also like to be on that list. I remember all the Bob Brinker wannabe's blasting me on Silicon Investor a few years ago when I said I liked what the Motley Fools were saying and that it was worth consideration. Bob Brinker on the radio was blasting the internets as over valued and all his followers mimed his words and blasted anyone that had a different idea on Silicon Investor. One of the reasons I started this site was to have a place to discuss things where people wouldn't be blasted for thinking differently than the BrinkerBots. (some of them still don't like me for that!)

What We "Could've Made!

Can you imagine how much money you would have made if you bought AOL and Amazon.com on that first recommendation by the Motley Fools after they guest hosted Moneytalk on ABC? They bought AOL on 8/5/94 and are up 18,300% on that pick and they bought AMZN on 9/9/97 and are up 2,851% on that pick. Only AMGN bought 12/16/98 is up 112% where all their other picks in their "Rule Breaker" portfolio are up small amounts. In other words, their fantastic performance is being carried by two very, very highly valued stocks in the internet sector.
