I am often asked "how do I find a stock or mutual fund on a foreign exchange?"
One of my favorite sites is Yahoo Quotes > which is part Yahoo. Besides allowing for multiple portfolios, this site is great for looking up stocks in Canada as well as in the US. Lets go through an example of finding a stock listed on the Toronto Exchange where I know part of the company's name, but not its stock ticker, exchange or full name.

To use the site:
- go to Yahoo Quotes
- then click on "Symbol Lookup" to the far right of "Get Quotes" in the gray box.
- Type in the name of a company you are looking for. For this example, type in "South Pacific" short for "South Pacific Resources"
- click on "Lookup"
- A list of possible matches is returned.
- click on SHF.AL for "South Pacific Resources" to get a detailed quote and a graph of the stock for the last year.
While you are at it, you should try personalizing your Yahoo site to display the stocks and mutual funds you are interested in tracking. To do this, click on "Personalize" at the top of the page (under the 2nd circle from the left). My personal version has portfolios for
- Stocks and mutual funds I own
- Stocks and mutual funds I don't own but track
- Stocks and Mutual funds for each of my clients.
- Market Indicators like the S&P500 and DOW
Your settings are kept on your local drive in a cookie file so you don't even have to worry about others finding out what you own.
