Classic Games on the Net - more than a deck of cards

If you like playing cards, then come with me on this latest tour of the internet playground. Although I'm going to be talking mostly about euchre, do not despair card game addicts because the site I'm going to introduce you to is great for those of you who like SPADES, HEARTS, BRIDGE and other classic games. I'm just focusing on euchre because it's what I know best!

I decided to talk about euchre now because I'm going through euchre-withdrawal. You see my non-cyber world doesn't have many people who like or even know how to play euchre. And since college, where I learned how to play, eat, sleep, and breathe the game, I have gone through many periods of withdrawal because no one will play with me *sniff*. I did receive a good computer euchre game as a gift so that I could play by myself (I think it was really a hint from the gift giver), but it's just not as fun as playing against a real person. So I turned to the playground to find people who could help me through these difficult periods of life.

The site we are going to talk about today is the games section on Excite. I'm focusing on this particular site because of how easy it is to use! You don't have to download any software (a big factor for me - helps keep too much clutter from the hard drive and minimizes the possibility of getting a virus!) and you don't have to pay to play - a key requirement of the internet playground. Some of you have noticed that there are other sites that have games similar to this (like Yahoo which also has a good games site) but I like this one the best.

The credit for the games on this site is given to "ten" and this company also has created the same game structure for other sites like www.go.com. So if "ten" created your favorite game site then you are already experiencing what I am about to describe.

In order to play the games at Excite you have to register as a player first. Then once you enter, you pick the game you want to play and then the fun begins. Here's how it works: after selecting the game of your choice, you choose a lounge, and then find a table that needs a player. The neat graphics make it pretty clear what's available and what's not. You can chat while you play and in the same box, you also see what's happening in the game (i.e. who passed, who chose trump, etc.).
