Zoner's Bona Fides

Howdy, Friend...

Dave Howell here. On the Web, I use the nicks "Dalton," or "Zoner." Have for a long time. Dates back to about October of '94, when I got my first real "Internet-ready" computer. That was to replace the Apple IIC, which replaced the Vic 20, which, I believe, is now a bootscraper somewhere in Nebraska. So, I've been "into" computers since 1983, when the Air Force took care of my mid-life career crisis and "offered" me the chance to be a computer programmer. Doesn't seem like fifteen years. Guess it's true time flies when you're havin' fun!

Here at Suite101, I sorta moseyed in, asked 'em if I could write about "Internet images." What's that mean . . .Internet images? Is that graphics? How-to's? Guide to "good" images you should check out? I'm of the mind that it's sorta "everything graphical." Now . . .THAT covers some ground! Certainly more than I can do alone. That's where y'all come in . . . I hope!

This is me . . . is that you?

For this column, I'm gonna do the "this is me" thing. Give you my "bona fides," you might say. 'Splain how come I'm here tellin' YOU what to do, where to go, how to get things done. Hope you'll bear with and help out, cause I DO have a MISSION here! There'll be more on the "mission" as time goes on . . . assumin' they let me stay.

The REASON I write this column is cause I WANT to. That, and cause I NEED to. For all the things I do, in the course of just ordinary livin,' there's little enough I get to do for "my own self." Maybe you feel the same, or maybe you're one of those truly lucky ones who's been doin' what you want for years. Not me.

Typical story. Well, except for the 20 years in the Air Force. Got to travel to Spain twice, livin' in both Seville and Madrid, for about seven years total. Another three years in Izmir, Turkey, not long after a year at a remote site in the Aleutian Islands, called Shemya. "The Black Pearl of the Aleutians," they told us. Yeah, right! We had another euphemism for what that two-by-four mile island really was! Consider myself very fortunate to have travelled around some, got to be in some great places as a "resident," not as a tourist. Big difference. Me and the Air Force parted on good terms in '87. I haven't looked back since, but I'm real glad they say "Howdy" every month!

Another 10 years in the private sector, still doin'
