The Price Of Money Just Ain't What It Used To Be

Back in the good old days...like 1995, you could buy a 100 MHz PC, with a 540 MB hard disk, 14.4 modem and maybe a 15 inch monitor for a measly three thousand bucks! A bargain at twice the price compared to the REALLY old days of '92 or '93, when you had to settle for 33 or 66 MHz.

Nowadays, if you got three grand in hand, you can buy the whole STORE! And oh...the possibilities of it all. Just kinda staggers the imagination when you start ponderin' what you can get for what a whole car used to cost back in the early sixties. (Guess I gave it away, there, huh? OK...I'm a geezer...and I'm PROUD of it, too!)

My dad used to preach to me about the value of a dollar, penny saved, and all that stuff. Course, he was a product of the Depression, and he lived a hardscrabble life in western Texas when he was growin' up. Tried to pass that philosophy on to my kids, but Guess and Tommy's stuff and the Gap, with $200 backpacks and $100 sneakers took care of that in short order! Hard to learn the value of a dollar when it takes so many of them to just buy lunch!

That's why I'm so amazed at computer and electronics prices today. Hell...they're givin' computers away now! Just givin' 'em to you, so they can show you advertising. Best freebie I ever got was a toaster when I opened a bank account. But, on the other hand, it didn't try to sell me anything else when I toasted my English muffins.

Some of the stuff I've seen lately for next to nothin' makes me wonder, though. I can get a modem for about the same money as dinner and a movie...for ONE! Scanners under a hundred bucks. CD-ROM's for fifty bucks. Umptygazillion MB hard drives for less than 5 cents a meg. Where's it all gonna end? Well...I'll tell ya,' since you asked.

It's all gonna get even cheaper. Just today, I see that the Pentium III chip prices are gonna be reduced by 35%, come next Monday. A PII 450 and a PIII 450 are gonna sell for the same price. Now, why is Intel doin' that? I know one thing for sure, it ain't outta the goodness of their hearts, cause Intel has no heart. It can, however, feel the pulse of OTHER hearts. Ours, for example.

We be on the verge of a huge onslaught, folks. It's happenin' all around us even as I sit here, predictin' it. It ain't gonna be long before we
