Beware of Domain Name Slamming

registration through your old company.

You now want to pay attention to any bills coming from your new registrar. I get bills from a LOT of different registrars, and I keep a list of which name is with which company so I am never paying the wrong company, or changing registrars when I don't want to. If you're not sure which registrar has your name, do a search here; towards the beginning of the data that's returned, you'll see "Registrar:" and a company name. If you need to visit that company site, look for the registrar's name on the right side of that page, and click on the link.

Shouldn't I switch companies if it means saving money?
That's up to you. I'm the kind of person who likes staying with one company as long as that company is offering me great service, great products, an easy-to-use management tool for my names, has a good reliable site, and prices I don't mind paying for all of the above. That may not always be the cheapest prices out there; I don't mind paying more when I know I'm getting more. Many of my and my clients' domain names are still with Network Solutions since they were registered over the last 6+ years. At $35 per year, it's hard to want to tie up my clients' time in transfers just to save a few dollars a year. Of course, if any of my clients wanted to transfer for any reason, or learn more about who has the best services or lowest prices, I would be happy to assist them in any way I could. But for now, I'm signing up new names mostly through AllDomains since they offer two years for $50, have a nice website, a great and easy management tool, and they offer not only other country codes, but also offer domain names in languages other than English (as in you can get a domain name written in Thai characters).
