New Labour is vulnerable on more issues than the Iraq war. The expanded series of nationalized school examinations and the changing rights and authority given to head teachers also concern many voters. The National Health Service continues to have problems, and assylum rules concern many voters. The image that Mr. Blair misuses the authority his large majority gives him is a valid issue. The true test of the extent of those concerns will be measured by voter turnout in four days.
A voter expressed New Labour's situation perfectly to the prime minister during the last edition of the "Question Time" program on which the Labour, Conservative, and Lib-Dem leaders were guests: "You should be thankful your opponents are so weak; else you would be in real trouble". Another audience member told Mr. Blair the description he hears most frequently of the prime minister is that he is "a good politician", but no one ever describes him as "a good leader". To this Mr. Blair rather flippantly replied: "That is for the voters to decide". It is for the voters to decide. It is interesting to note that the Whitehall constituency where most government activity occurs is one of the few parts of London represented by a Conservative MP. Whether the national electorate want another dose of New Labour or would prefer a new team to occupy Downing Street soon will be known. Go To Page: 1 2
