Crises, Calamities, and Confusion in 2004Mergers in the telecom sector were proposed, revoked, revised, and sought with different partners. The system of international accounting standards consolidated the various GAAP rules. On 1 January the new reporting requirements will be mandatory for all Europe-based companies and will be the preferred standard for companies whose securities are quoted on multiple exchanges. Some details still must be refined to settle issues of compliance with the Basle standards for banks. Some goals for 1 January did not materialize. The Free Trade Area of the Americas did not reach finality mainly because the US Congress did not ratify the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). With the Presidential election finished, Congress is expected to act quickly to approve CAFTA. Now 2004 enters the history files, and 2005 awaits exploration. We can only wonder what series of crises, calamities, and confusion this new year will bring the world.
