Perhaps realizing their unfortunate situation, Democrats felt obligated to defend their man in the White House. Rather than answering the charges, they attacked the character of the chair person of the committee investigating the scandal of the moment. Attack the messenger is how this strategy is often described, but attacking the messenger is rather unwise when the messenger has its facts and supporting documentation in order. And all the while other forces were in progress.

Next week we examine the influence of the culture of the 1960s on US politics and consider the rhetorical stagnation of the entire system.
