War on terrorism report card: November editionThe Students destined for Summer School Pakistan & General Musharraf: B+ (Last Semester: A-) Sure they are ‘on side’ in the war on terror, and even the street in Pakistan seems to understand what victory means, but the news that some Taleban members were being helped to escape to Pakistan makes you wonder. The CIA: B- The intelligence community was hard hit by September 11th. But the first casualty in the war has been a CIA counter terrorist operative, killed in action in Afghanistan. This does not dissolve the mistakes of the past, but shows how quickly an organization can get back in the game. The Northern Alliance: B+ (Last Semester: C+) Well they found Kabul and pretty much everything else and they haven’t been too vengeful yet. What happens next is anyone’s guess, but the moderate elements (including Abdullah Abdullah) seem to be winning the peace. Colin Powell: B (Last Semester: C+) At one point Powell seemed to be guiding this war towards a diplomatic quagmire. But even he can’t dispute the victories in Afghanistan. Destined to Dropout Canada: D- (Last Semester: D+) At one point Canada offered up 1,000 troops to the efforts in Afghanistan. To get them to the region, the Canadian military had arranged the help of some Russian airlift. But then when it looked like the war was too dangerous, Canada balked. They did have a Canada Loves NY rally-but this nation is not up to the task. The Taleban: F It didn’t take a genius to figure this one out. But when cities like Kabul were liberated and citizens were overjoyed (flying kites, shaving beards, and watching movies) making it all worthwhile. The first “Oliver Stone Award” goes to: Noam Choamsky The MIT professor has outdone himself since September 11th and has declared his own war against the war on terror. Beyond just an anti-American bias, Choamsky, has not only condemned the war itself and its effect upon the humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, but he has called the campaign a ‘silent genocide’. Please, Noam, give me a break. Three words: kites, beards, and movies
