Mr. 92 percentVANCOUVER Sept 8 - - The immediate reaction to the escalation in the war on terrorism to include military strikes against bin Laden’s terrorists camps and strongholds of the Taliban has been met with overwhelming support. A USA Today/CNN/Gallup Poll taken shortly after the first wave of air strikes shows that Bush has the support of the American people. 90% of Americans approve of his decision to order military action and an unbelievable 92% of them approve of his overall handling of the national security crisis. He is becoming Mr. 92 %. Bush is popular because almost every single day since the attack (and readers will notice that unlike Reuters we still call this an attack) he has, very successfully, articulated the position of the US government. He said that the war is going to be long, involve many factors, and many targets. He said it, he is doing it, and isn’t it refreshing to here someone mean what they say and say what they mean. “This military action is a part of our campaign against terrorism, another front in a war that has already been joined through diplomacy, intelligence, the freezing of financial assets and the arrests of known terrorists by law enforcement agents in 38 countries. Given the nature and reach of our enemies, we will win this conflict by the patient accumulation of successes, by meeting a series of challenges with determination and will and purpose,” said Bush from the Treaty Room on October 7. Bush has this 92% support because he hasn’t lost his focus on the issue at hand-unlike the presidency that preceded him. There is an email going around that suggests that if the US government spent as much money as they trying to prosecute Bill Gates and Microsoft as they should have on tracking down terrorists in 1993 (World Trade Center bombing), 1996 (bombing of Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia), 1998 (the Embassy bombings in Africa) and 2000 (the bombing on the USS Cole) thousands of lives might be saved. And unlike the presidency of his father, this Bush looks like he will carry the mission to its full conclusion. That means no Saddam in Iraq, any weapons of mass destruction falling into the wrong hands, and dealing with two-bit harbors of terror throughout the world once and for all. Mr. 92% has the team and the will to carry out these goals and the people will support him-who knows, maybe in six months we’ll be talking about the 95% man?
