For those of you thinking of relocating to Argentina, here's a bit of information, gathered from http://www.invertir.com, that will help you with you learn more about the country's business culture.
Overview Argentina is unique in that its business cultural refects a combination of both European and Latin American elements. Much of this can be attributed to the European heritage of many of its people. However, it's important to remember that no matter how European they may act, they are still Argentines and are very nationalistic. What does this mean? Well, it means to expect the following. Argentines are savy, resourceful, amitious, highly educated hard workers. They enjoy competition, but are not cut thoats and do not appreciate those who are. Instead they view competition as one would a sporting event. You put forth your best effort and, in the end, the best man, or team, wins. While they have very sophisticated organizational structures, their approach to business is very relaxed and friendly and they often develop alliances to get the job done. Once a project is completed successfully, they readily share the credit. However, one should not look at this laid back attitude and think that Argentines are not detailed oriented and dedicated to bringing about success. They just go about it in a different way than most Americans. Family and friends are very important to Argentines and business will often have to wait if a family member or friend drops by. Knowing this, it should not be surprising that forming relationships is very important if one wants to do business in Argentina. Language Even though Spanish is the national language, many Argentines also speak English, Italian, German, or French. Business Attire Argentines dress well. This means that whenever there is a question of attire, it is best to sway towards the conservative, formal, and elegant. And always, always wear good quality shoes. Sense of Time When it comes to their sense of time, you once again see the mix of European and Latin cultures. Many Argentine businessmen are conscious of time and, like Americans, tend to view time as money. However, they do make time, and will even make business wait, for family and friends, a cup of coffee, or a long lunch. They view a sense of urgency with mistrust and think that it is rude. Meetings usually won't start on time, and when they do start, they will be informal and will proceed at a rather slow pace. However, you, as a foreigner, should always be on time and be patient. That's just the way it is.
