Does the the thought of traveling overseas make you feel just a little bit anxious these days? If so, you're not alone. International air travel is down dramatically. However, if you are looking for an international job, you'll have to fly to your destination country at some point. Here are some safety precautions that you can take to make your trip a bit less worrisome. Book your flight on a non-American airliner. Since Americans are the target of the recent terrorist attacks, it is more likely that they would target American airliner flights as opposed to European ones. So consider booking your flight on airliners like Air France, British Airways, and TAP as opposed to the likes of American or Delta. If you have a second passport, use it. If you have a second passport, this might be a good time to use it. Officials are recommending that Americans overseas keep a low profile. Traveling with a non-American passport will make it just a bit harder to identify you as an American. Check the safety of your destination. It's a good idea for all U.S. citizens planning to travel abroad to consult the Department of State's Public Announcements, Travel Warnings, Consular Information Sheets, Fact Sheets, and regional travel brochures. All of these are available at the Consular Affairs Internet website at http://travel.state.gov. American travelers may also hear recorded information by calling the Department of State in Washington, D.C. at 202-647-5225 from their touch-tone telephone, or get information by automated telefax by dialing 202-647-3000 from their fax machine Keep a low profile. When security announcements are issued, it is often recommended that Americans living abroad keep a low profile. Stay away from large crowds when possible, be aware of your surroundings and anything that may look suspicious, and don't make it obvious that you are an American. As has been demonstrated, the terrorist do not distiguish between miltiary and civilian targets, so use common sense Keep abreast of the latest news. Keep abreast of the latest happenings by watching the news, listening to the radio, and using the Internet. Being informed will enable you to make wiser decisions.
